I enjoy watching Cross Country (XC) running.  Probably because I have watched my daughter run for the last 5 years. I absolutely love the feeling of teamwork and competition that I get at the meets. Her XC team is like family to her, offering support and encouragement all the time.

Cross Country is not an individual sport, as many would think. The individual time for each runner doesn't matteras much as the team score. The team score consists of the top 5 runners and how closely together they finish the race. All 5 top runners Have to cross the finish line for the team to score, and if just one runner doesn't finish the race...
the entire team is disqualified.

Recently her coach sent down a YouTube video that impacted me so greatly that it brought tears to my eyes. The video is of a team competing for their 8th XC championship. The coach of this team was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig disease, and the team has decided to rally around their coach and dedicate this championship race to him. The video starts where four of the top runners have just finished the race, but as the fifth runner approaches the finish line something is terribly wrong.

"It Takes HEART"

This runner slows down as she approaches the finish line and is obviously in pain and severe duress. She has become dehydrated and she drops to a walk for a few feet, then falls to the ground just five meters from the finish line (about
10 feet). When she falls, one of the personnel at the finish line immediately comes onto the course and to her side.

But in the rules for XC he is NOT allowed to assist a runner in any way, or the entire team is disqualified. So this man leans over the runner and asks her if she thinks she can make it.  She rolls over, and slowly begins to crawl the
last five meters to the finish line. The crowd goes crazy clapping for her, but you can see she is in pain, and is struggling to even crawl, but she continues to slowly crawl towards the finish line, not just for her team, but in honor of her coach as well. It is painful to watch her as she takes about a minute or two to crawl on her hands and knees, but she finally pulls herself the ten feet to cross the finish line and is immediately scooped up by the medical personnel and given assistance.

What an amazing effort to finish the race in pain and with little strength left, to honor her coach and support her team so they are not disqualified! She ends up clenching the team's 8th championship by crawling over that finish line!

This is the kind of "heart" that XC brings out in these kids. I have seen it happen over and over again.

OK, so you may ask "but how does this relate to my business"?

Well, this runner, giving her heart and soul to this race, not only for her team, but also for her coach, shows what it takes to " have heart". So I ask YOU...what kind of "heart" can you draw up in yourself to finish the race you have placed before you?

It takes "heart" to finish the goals you have set for yourself in your business.

It takes "heart" to keep going no matter how bad it hurts or how much you falter along the way.

It takes "heart" to see it through, to cross that finish line for yourself, and for the people who mentor and support you in your business.

So don't EVER give up on reaching your goal, there is always a way for you to finish the race and achieve the success you desire...
if you just have "HEART".

  1. I had tears in my eyes reading this Julee. What an encouraging story. Though we may not have physical pain while building our businesses there can be emotional pain. Whether it be frustration, disappointment or even problems in relationships because of dedication to building a business, it does take “heart” to stick with it.

  6. Hey, Julee.
What a great story. This is one in which I as well as many others can relate on a more emotional level when it comes to our business. But having “heart” (passion) is what will help one overcome.
